For many visitors, Hong Kong, which means "Fragrant Harbor," is a gateway city to a uniquely Asian experience. This bustling city is a study in cultural contradictions. Visitors will find narrow streets and old, crumbling buildings situated next to ultra-modern high-rises built with bamboo scaffolding, market vendors selling dried squid while talking on their cell phones, and old Chinese men pushing wheelbarrows as the newest-model auto zips by. Hong Kong is where the East meets the West and the past meets the present, in an interplay of the exotic and the technologically advanced.

Hong Kong is a very efficient and fast city. Nowhere is this more evident than in the region's comprehensive and modern transportation system.

Airport

Norman Foster (who also designed the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank) is responsible for masterminding the fantastic new airport at Chek Lap Hok. The new terminal is the largest single airport building in the world and was designed to soothe the fears of those who dislike flying. The ingenious use of light and space within the building allows visitors to see out to the fields, planes and sea, the idea being that this should be a welcoming place to enter and stay. The facilities here too are fantastic and the airport has the largest retail space of its kind in the world.

Railway station

Hong Kong's train station, Hung Hom Railway station is in Kowloon. Trains between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, Shanghai and other Chinese cities operate out of here. Bus No.5 runs to the station from the Star Ferry. For up to date train information call 2602 7799.

city transport

Hong Kong's city transport is also very good. The tram is a fun way to explore Hong Kong Island. Each trip costs HK3. Tram lines run from Happy Valley to Kennedy Town. The MTR (the underground system) is also very efficient. There are four lines operating on Kowloon and Hong Kong Island and single journey's cost from between HK$4-11. Finally, the Star Ferry is a scenic, efficient and cheap way to travel between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon.
