Tianjing Introduction

　Tianjin lies in the north of China, 137km/85 miles south-east of Beijing. It can be reached from Beijing by rail, bus or air. as Tianjin is an important rail, road, air and shipping hub - it lies at the confluence of five tributaries of the Haihe river - it is also to get to from other large Chinese cities. There are also daily schedules flights to Hong Kong.
The first settlements in the region date back to the times of the Warring Kingdoms (475-221 B.C.). Tianjin was well known as a trading settlement in the 12th c., when it was a centre for the sale and distribution of corn and other foodstuffs from the south.
In 1404 the town - then known as Tianjinwei - was given a town-wall and made into a military garrison. It became increasingly important as a commercial centre during the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1911). In 1858 the Chinese government was obliged to sign the "Treaty of Tianjin" which provided trading concessions to foreigners, something which the population found abhorrent and which led to serious conflicts. Two years later foreign powers occupied Tianjin and declared its port open to all trading ships. In the years that followed Great Britain, France, Japan, Germany, Russia, Italy, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Belgium were all granted trading franchises here, and they gave the town a certain European character which it still retains to some degree.
Tianjin, the third largest city in China, is one of northern China's leading industrial cities. Although heavy industry predominates, light industry, chemicals, textiles and the famous carpet factories all make an important contribution to the economy. The city co-operates to a major degree with countries overseas. Xingang, one of China's largest ports, is only 48km/30 miles from the centre of Tianjin.

By air	Tianjin has flights connecting almost all important Chinese cities, and some international destinations. The airport here is 13km from the city center. The main CAAC office is at 113 Nanjing Lu. There are shuttle buses (RMB10) between them. Beside, there are also buses to Beijing Capital Airport, cost RMB70.Schedule
By train	Tianjin has express train connection with Beijing. The express train is available throughout the day by several dozen trains. Tianjin is also linked to the national railway system which reaches all important Chinese cities. Tianjin has direct trains to Shanghai, Nanjing, Ji'nan, Fuzhou, Hefei, Yantai, Qingdao, Shijiazui, Harbin, Shenyang, and Changchun
By bus	Tianjin has good connection with the rest of the country by road. It is in the middle of the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan express way which makes it extremely convenient to drive to Beijing and other places in Hebei province. Through Beijing, express ways will take you to Shijiazhuang, Dalian, Zhengzhou and more destinations. Besides these Tianjin has direct buses linking Jinzhou, Harbin, Shenyang, Taiyuan, Wenzhou, etc.
City transport	Tianjin has regular passenger boat services to Yantai and Dalian. Boats to and from Dalian are available all year round at a daily basis. Boats between Yantai and Tianjin are available daily in summer only.

Food	You can usually satisfy all your daily needs at your local market, though you might be a bit reticent about buying meat that's been lying out in the summer heat. If you're getting a craving for western food, try the following places.

Entertainment	Tianjin, as a lively industrial town with a large foreign and trendy local population, is a fairly good place for nightlife and entertainment. There are a wealth of clubs and bars here that can be tried out, although nothing of exceptional quality. The best, and most expensive, of the lot is probably the Sunrise Club (Zhaori julebu) on Chongqing Road (Chongqing dao), which, although a little bit to the south, has nightly live music and an interesting decor. My Disco (Wode diting) on Anshan road (Anshan dao) and Chat's Bar in the Hyatt are also worth a visit, while the DD Disco Square, on 335 Machang Road (Machang dao) is a little bit tacky Chinese.Mother Nature seems to be on the side of Tianjin with its location at the junction of Haihe River and Bohai Sea, both economically and for recreation. Two of the most popular forms of entertainment here are speedboating (Kuaiting) best done towards Tanggu at Dagukou, although the level of safety is debatable, and shooting. If you are into guns, then Tianjin could well be your place, the city boasts some well equipped shooting ranges where you can try out pistols, automatic rifles and even machine guns. For those after a little less high-speed action, there is an ice rink and bowling center on the eleventh floor of the Isetan Department Store (Jili Dasha), open until 12pm. For budding Tiger Woods', there is a golf course (Gaoerfu qiuchang) out towards the main port of Tanggu.Festivals here are also quite popular, most of them held on the Ancient Culture Street. The New Year Picture Festival held during the Spring Festival is highly popular, a celebration of the coming year, with displays of the famous woodblock prints from Yangliuqing. Other festivals include the Rose Festival in May, the Great Wall Mountain Festival in autumn, and the popular International Marathon on the first Sunday of April. The street itself also often has displays of street art, Tianjin ballet, puppeteering and traditional opera that makes this street lively and crowded.
