Anqing is a famous cultural city with a long history. It is where the ancient Wanguo about 2000 years ago was located, so Anhui Province is abbreviated to "Wan".

The city began to take shape in 1217 and thus has a history of more than 770 years. It used to be the provincial seat of Anhui province for 170 years from 1760 to 1938. Thus it was the center of politics, economy and culture of the province.

Anqing became the commercial port opened to the outside in China in 1876. The first Chinese motor-driven ship was built here and the first electrical plant and water plant of Anhui were set up here, too. It is one of the important source places of the national industry in China.

Anqing is the hometown of Huangmei Opera, the Chinese traditional opera. It is the birthplace of "Tongcheng school of essayists" who had played a dominant role in Chinese literature in the Qing dynasty for 200 years, and of Peking Opera, the Chinese famous opera.

Anqing is the hometown of Li Gonglin, a well-known painter in the Song dynasty, Fang Yizhi, a thinker in the Ming dynasty, Deng Shiru, a calligraphist in the Qing dynasty, Cheng Changgen, a founder of Peking opera, Cheng Duxiu, a leader of china's New Culture Movement, and Zhang Henshui a celebrated novelist.

With rich products and a cultivated area of 273,000 hectare, it becomes a production base of rice, cotton and rape. It is rich in forestry resources too, with a forestry area 480,000 hectare. The Dabie mountain is one of the animals and plants houses in China.

Anqing is the main producing area of freshwater fish with a water area which is available for fish breeding up to 154000-121000 mu. The water area and available fishery farming area is one quarter of the total in Anhui.

There are plenty of mineral resources in Anqing, because it is located in the copper and iron ore horizon of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Until now there are seventy kinds of mineral has been discovered. Among them the quantity and quality of granite, marble, lime stone and copper have high economic value to extract.

As the second tourist base-tourist zone of the southwest in Anhui, it is the transfer station of tourist hot line in central China. There are abundant magnificent landscapes and historical sites here, they are the famous scenic spot Tianzhu mountain, Yao Luoping Forest Park, the natural conservation area under state protection; the grand number one pagoda, Zhenfeng Pagoda, and the state-level forest park--Miaodao Mountain and Dalong Mountain.
