Ningde Prefecture is also called "East Fujian". It lies in
the northeast of Fujian, facing the East Sea on the east and bordered
by Wuyi Mountain on the west. On the south of it is Fuzhou City and
on the north is Zhejiang Province. Covering an area of 12,905 square
kilometers, Ningde Prefecture has jurisdiction over 9 counties and cities:
Ningde City, Fu'an City, Fuding City, Zhouning County, Xiapu County,
Zherong County, Gutian County, and Pingnan County, with its dministrative
office in Ningde City. Its whole population is 2,979,800, among which
the population of the She Nationality is 158,000, ranking first in the
country.
In 282, the third year of Taikang of the Jin Dynasty, here it was set
up as a county named "Wenma County". Later it was renamed
as Changxi County in the Tang Dynasty. In the Yuan Dynasty, it was developed
into "Funing Zhou" ("zhou" is an ancient administrative
division which is a little larger than a county). In the 13th year of
Yongzheng of the Qing Dynasty, it was developed into "Funing Prefecture"
again. Since 1950, it has been named as "Fu'an Prefecture".
In 1970, the administrative office was moved out of Fu'an into Ningde,
so its name was changed into Ningde Prefecture.
