Food
Surrounded by the South China sea's abundant seafood resources, Sanya boasts some great restaurants serving up good fresh seafood. Added to this, there are two huge fisheries here, the Beibuwan Fishery and the South China Sea Fishery. Abalone, sea cucumber and other exotic foods are common dishes served in restaurants here, and a visit to the port area in the city center is testament to the incredible wealth and freshness of the food here. If you do wander down this direction however, make sure you take your wellington boots and a clothes peg to hold your nose! The stench from the boats and fishing nets can be unbearable! Above and beyond the more unusual seafood available here are standard fishy dishes including lobster, mussels and crab. There are numerous seafood restaurants in Sanya and the Chinese restaurant in the Gloria Resort in Yalongwan Bay is especially good. The Luhuitou Restaurant and Fuquan Restaurant are among the most famous in the area serving up some nice local specialties. In the city itself, Zhenmen Lu has some great little seafood joints, cooking up cheap yet tasty dishes.
The best things to take home from Sanya are definitely sea products. Surrounded by the sea on three sides, this is an ideal place to pick up some pretty shell or coral based decorations and jewelry. Bear in mind however, that this is essentially a tourist destination and prices may be higher than one would expect to pay elsewhere in China. Sea water pearls are particularly gorgeous here, and widely available in tourist shops and from traders across the island. The night market around the harbor in Sanya, oozes with atmosphere and bargains galore! Take some time to stroll around here, soak up the smells and sounds and browse the fantastic collection of goods for sale here. Crystal also makes a pretty souvenir. In Sanya city, the major shopping districts are the Dadonghai and Tianya Haijiao districts and there are a few good places on Jiefang Lu. Good shops to consider are the Jingrun Pearl Shop, Yanglan Crystal Shop and the Guobin Department Store.
Largely a result of the climate here, most of the entertainment in the tropical
zone takes place at night, and Sanya is no exception. As the sun sets, bars
and tea houses open their doors onto the beaches and bays, and there is a real
feeling here that life begins after dusk.
With the development of tourism, many entertainment facilities have been created
to cater to travelers needs and demands. Water sports, including surfing, scuba
diving, swimming and water-skiing are hugely popular with tourists here and
Sanya is also the training base for the Chinese national surfing and diving
team. To join in the fun, visit one of the best places on Dadonghai beach or
Wuzhizhou Island where you can embark on a submarine or swim amongst coral and
tiny fish.
Most of the large hotels in Sanya are well furnished with huge night clubs.
Among these, the bar in the Fudao Hotel is the most impressive and most of the
hotel bars in Yalong Bay attract a nice crowd.
