Anyang lies in the northern-most part of central
China¨s Henan Province. Seen from a map, the city is located right in
the center of the country. To the west are the rolling Taihang Mountains,
where you can find the source of the river that runs through the whole
city.
Anyang has a very long history. According to archaeological research,
primitive man had already formed a fairly developed civilization in the
area more than 25 thousand years ago. But the large quantities of Jiaguwen
unearthed there tell us that recorded history began about 3000 years ago
in the city.
Jiaguwen are the oldest writings discovered in China, and were first used
in the Shang Dynasty more than 3000 years ago. Anyang, or Yin as it was
called at the time, was the capital. In fact, Anyang is considered the
oldest of China¨s seven famous ancient capitals.
Its long history and rich culture have left much to see in the Anyang
of today.
When touring the city, one should definitely make a trip to see the ruins
of the ancient city of Yin. Located to the northwest of downtown Anyang,
the whole area is about 24 square kilometers and is divided into different
functional districts; one for imperial palaces, one for the tombs of the
imperial family, one for workshops, one for the people¨s tombs and one
for the houses of ordinary people and their slaves.
