Located at the junction of the Beijing Guangzhou and Longhai Railways in the central part of Henan Province, Zhengzhou is the Provincial capital.
Zhengzhou is a time-honoured city as well as a heroic city with a revolutionary tradition. It took shape of a town named Aodu as early as 3500 years ago. It is here that the Beijing- Hankou Railway workers held the famous February 7 Strike in 1923, making the city well-known.
Zhengzhou has experienced thousands of years of profound changes, but today Zhengzhou is a new commercial city that has risen from this piece of ancient land. When President Jiang Zemin inspected Zhengzhou city on June 5, 1996, an inscription was written by him which says "Building zhengzhou into a modern socialist commercial city." Zhengzhou currently has eight large and modern department stores with annual sales of over 100 million yuan each. The well-known "Commercial War " now spreading all over the country first took place among these eight department stores. As a result, the Asia Business Style, a commercial style exemplified by the Asia Department Store, was then created. So far, Zhengzhou has established 472 markets of various kinds, of which the nationwide wholesale markets and exchanges amount to more than a dozen. Both the market number and the total sales lead their counterparts in other Chinese cities.
