Airport

In the western section of town, the main CAAC office (Tel: 0472-5135492) can be found at 26 Changtie dajie, to the east of the intersection with Fuqiang lu. There is also a travel service in the Baotou Hotel that can provide tickets. In the eastern section of town, the CAAC office (Tel: 0472-4172266 ext.4258) can be found in the Donghe Hotel. The airport is 2km south of the eastern section of the city, Donghe district. Taxis should be around RMB20-30 to Donghe and RMB40-50 to the western section of the city. For those on a budget, it is possible to walk to the eastern section of the city, and then, if needed, catch buses No.5 or 10 to the western section. From the west a CAAC bus leaves from the CAAC office for RMB10.Baotou is connected by regular flights to and from such major cities as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and less regularly to cities including Xi'an., Yulin, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan and Lanzhou

Railway station

Baotou has connection with a number of cities in China including Hohhot (2-3hrs.), Beijing (13hrs.), Tianjin (7.5hrs.), Tiayuan (13.5hrs.) and Shanghai (32hrs.).There are two railway stations in the city, one in the western section, to the south of Kundulun District (Baotou zhan), and the other in the eastern section, south Donghe (Baotou dongzhan or Donghe zhan). All trains into the city stop at both stations, so ask before alighting. Buying tickets at either of the train stations is not the easiest, so it may be worthwhile going to one of the travel agents in hotels, that are convenient, although will charge commission. Try CITS (Tel: 0472-5154615) in the Baotou Hotel.

Bus station

Buses to Hohhot (3hrs.) and Dongsheng (2hrs.) depart from the Baotou bus station, although for destinations further afield, it is probably better to take the train. Buses are mainly used for travelling to nearby sights, including Genghis Khan's Mausoleum, Wudangzhao Monastery and the Resonant Gorge. The main bus station is in the eastern section of the city, opposite the Donghe railway station. There are also long distance buses leaving from the station near to the intersection of Tuanjie dajie and Baiyun e'bo lu.

city transport

Minibuses shuttle back and forth within the city for just RMB2.5. Taxis and mini vans congregate round the railway station and tourist hotels. Although the minimum you have to pay is RMB8, it is still worth bargaining for longer journeys. Bike renting is also possible, ask in the Baotou Hotel, or other hotels, for details. Bikes are particularly useful for getting around in this vast, sprawling city.
