Shaoxing Opera ---- A Unique Charm of the South
Shaoxing opera, an exotic flower of the South, has a history of glory.
Her predecessor is a genre of popular folk entertainment art named diduban,
which was prevailing in the countryside around Shangxian County, a small mountain
area lying to the west of Siming Mountain, in Zhejinag Province. This folk entertainment
art had a countrified music, but it was pure, sweet and pleasant. Afterwards,
she was developed from Xiaogeban to Shaoxing Wenxi. During that period, she
was loved widely by the broad masses in the country. With the paces of times,
she stepped forwards extremely hard in order to enter a big city. Because of
the unremitting efforts made by innumerable entertainers, the inconspicuous
diduban at that time had an unexpected luck in Shanghai, a metropolis infested
with foreign adventurers. Then she had a nice name-Shaoxing Opera. After all-round
reform, she, a younger sister in the big family of traditional drams, became
well known for her pretty appearance, with the tender and delicate sentiments
expressed in sweet and pleasant melodies. Now, its popularity is the second
only to Beijing Opera. Like a golden phoenix coming out of col, she has been
smoothing out her colorful wings, and soaring in the sky.
The beautiful Hangzhou area adds the flavor to Shaoxing Opera, which has sweet
music, beautiful actresses and extraordinary mood. A lot of excellent plays
and famous actresses are constantly emerging. One very cradle of them is Xiaobaihua
Company of Hangzhou Shaoxing Opera Troup, which was founded in 1956. It attained
its power from the superior actors of various schools, among whom many won the
gold or silver medals provincially and nationally. There are a lot of well-known
plays, such as Emerald Harepin, Jade Dragonfly. In 1995 and 1996, its new plays
Lotus Lake, Affection of Pear Blossoms entered Beijing and the latter was staged
before the 4th Women's World Conference of UN.
This year, people are celebrating the 100th anniversary of Shaoxing Opera, and
a lot of activities will be held. A century ago, Shaoxing Opera was little more
than a kind of ballad-singing the peasants liked to enjoy in their spare time,
then a century later, it is one of the most popular operas in China. We believe
that it will bloom forever!
