1£©Fried Dough Twist
Although plain in look, this queue-shaped fried dough is by no means
easy to make. Each bar of dough is made with quality flour and then
fried in peanut oil. The bars are usually stuffed with a variety of
fillings, most often the waxy tasting beanpaste (Dou sha) - a taste
for only the hardy. Since it can be preserved for several months, you
can take some of this crispy specialty back home to share with family.
2£©Goubuli Steamed Stuffed Bun
Although you can find these steamed stuffed buns (Bao zi) almost everywhere
in China, Goubuli is still the hardest to make (involving eight steps)
and is consequently the most favored one among its peers. It is characterized
by its unusual flavor and because it is void of the fatty liquid that
is commonly found in other buns. In recent years, buns made with stuffing
other than pork meat have caught on, including some interesting vegetarian
options.

4)Sour Date Kernel
One of the most commonly used sedative/hypnotic in Chinese prescriptions
for treating insomnia and neurasthenia is suanzaoren (sour date kernel).
It is the dried ripe kernels of Ziziphus jujube Mill. var. spinosa (Bunge)
Hu ex H.F. Chow (syn. Ziziphus spinosa Hu). Although first recorded
3000 years ago, this medicinal has only recently been evaluated by modern
scientific methods and found to indeed possess sedative and hypnotic
effects in various experimental animals (Hong and Cao 1987). Spinosin,
a flavonoid glycoside, is only partially responsible for these effects
(Li and Zhang 1983, Yuan et al. 1987, Zeng et al. 1987). Other active
components in this drug still await further investigations.
5)Tianjin Carpet

Tianjin is the carpet center of Northern China in the modern times
and Tianjin carpet industry traces back to the time over 100 years ago,
when Tianjin was the largest wool collecting and distributing center
and an important city of foreign trade. This unique geographical location
and historical conditions made Tianjin carrot industry develop rapidly
and become a major carpet production and exporting base. By the year
of 1930, there were over 300 carpet producers in Tianjin, exporting
2 million square feet a year, occupying the first place in carpet export
business in the country.
6)Ear-Hole Fried Cake
The Ear-Hole Fried Cake is another one of the famous traditional Tianjin
snacks. It derived its name from the narrow Ear-Hole Street in Tianjin's
Beidaguan, where the shop selling it was located. The Ear-Hole Fried
Cake has a history of more than 80 years. lt was introduced by a man
named Liu Wanchun, who peddled it on a single-wheel barrow from street
to street. When his business prospered, he rented a room and opened
Liu's Fried Cake Shop. Because the fried cake he made was of high quality,
reasonable in price and had a special flavour, it soon became a popular
snack.
7)Guobacai
A snack of strong local flavour, guobacai is a sort of pancake made
of millet and mung bean flour. The pancake is sliced and cooked in the
sauce made of sesame oil, chopped ginger, soy sauce, preserved beancurd
and green onion. Guobacai is often served along with fried dough and
sesame cakes.
8)Tangdui
It is a custom in Tianjin to eat tangdui on the eve of the Chinese New
Year. The most popular tangdui is made of hawthorn berry. Hawthorn berries
have their seeds removed and are skewered on a thin bamboo stick, then
dipped in hot syrup. When they turn cool, the stringed berries wrapped
in crystal sugar look like beautiful stone beans pungently sweet and
sour.
Sometimes, the hollowed hawthorn berries are filled with red bean paste,
walnut and melon seeds. Today, in addition to hawthorn, a wide variety
of tangdui has been developed, including water chestnut, tangerine,
apple, pear and crab-apple, etc.
