Tangka is the name for the scroll-banners seen hanging in every temple, monastery and family shrine in Tibet. They carry painted or embroidered pictures inside a broad, colored border and can range in size from the page of a book to the fa?ade of an entire building. The picture is usually made on paper or cotton canvas protected by a thin dust-cover; the mounting is of colorful silk. A heavy wooden stick at the base allows a Thangka to be rolled up like a scroll for storage or transportation, or to hang securely without flapping.

¡¡¡¡Tangka first appeared in Tibet around the tenth century AD. The scroll form seems to have been borrowed from the inner land; the style of painting probably came from Nepal and Kashmir. Apprentice thangka painters studied under experienced lamas, and their works were consecrated before they could be hung.

¡¡¡¡Tangkas were widely used in monastery school as teaching tools because of their convenient movability. Common folk hung them in homes as protection against evil spirits. At the highest level of religious practice, mystics in a state of mediation would become one with the deity portrayed.

¡¡¡¡Tibetan broadsword used to be one of the Tibet people's day-to-day necessities.Its a mixture of three functions,namely,helping eat meat,guarding themselves from attacks and being a kind of decoration.Man-used broadswords are commonly sharp and boorish,while,the women-used are gentle. Both of them are available in shops.The most famous Tibetan broadswords are Lhatse and Xietongmen Broadsword in Shigatse,which are characterised by their silver sheath and sharp edges.So, you're advised to note whether it is Tibetan broadsword while purchasing,otherwise it will lose its unique characteristic and value of collection.

14)Butter Sculpture

Most butter sculptures produced in Lhasa and elsewhere are made for the Lamp Festival on the fifteenth day of the first month of the Tibetan year. Skilled practitioners of this art can be found in the monasteries and among the lay people alike. The butter is first mixed with ice water, then mineral dyes mixed in. working on a wooden support, a world of flowers and grass and towers and buildings, populated with men and animals and bodhisattvas, is then created.

15)Highland Barley
¡¡¡¡Highland Barley, also called Barley,is the principal material used to make Rtsam-pa.Method of making: grind the sauted Highland Barley into flour then mix it with ghee.The Rtsam-pa made of Highland Barley are not only the traditional food of Tibetan people,but frequently appears in main hotels in Lhasa as the main dish used to feast guests from home and abroad.In religious festivels,Tibetans will cast Rtsam-pa to express their blessing to each other.

16)Beef & Mutton
¡¡¡¡Tibetans live on beef,mutton and milk products.As everybody knows,beef and mutton contain high heat energy,which is helpful for people living in the area of high attitude to withstand coldness.It is very interesting that Tibetans have the practice of eating raw meats.Dried beef and mutton will be found hanging in Tibetans' tents if you pay a visit to the local families,and the host may ask you to taste the dried raw beef and mutton.

17)Yak Butter
¡¡¡¡Yak Butter,,refined from the milk of cattles and goats,is the daily food of Tibetans.It is intriguing for Tibetans to refine yak butter.As milk segregators are not widely used in the pasturing area in Tibet,Tibetan people usually refine milk in old way.Tibetan women pour the heated milk into a big wooden bucket called "Xue Dong",then whip forcibly up and down for hundreds of times to segregate grease from water.Step by step,a tier of somthing light yellow will surface, subsequently ladle the floating and put it into a leather bag to cool it.In this way,the refinement of yak butter ends.Yak butter has very high value of nutrition. Tibetans usually eat fruits and vegetables little,especially in pasturing area,the daily required heat energy is supplied by yak butter besides meats.

18)Rtsam-pa
¡¡¡¡The basic Tibetan meal is tsampa, a kind of dough made with roasted barley flour and yak butter with water, teror beer. It has a certain novelty value the first time you try it, but only a Tibetan can eat it every day and still look forward to the next meal.Outside Lhasa, Tibetan food is limited mainly to momos and thugpa.
